STUDENT QUESTIONS OF SENSEI
Why are there different types of karate? And how many different types are there? From Brielle
There are 5 major styles of karate. Goju Ryu, Shotokan, Wado Ryu, Chito Ryu and Kyokushinkai.
The reason for so many styles, is each style reflects the creator’s idea of the best techniques for fighting. For example, a large strong person would favor certain techniques that would compliment their strength. A small fast person would prefer a different strategy. Their students again might make small changes or even add techniques that they feel are needed. This cycle if continued over a few generations would result in perhaps several variations of the original style.

How many students have reached the level of black belt at Burtnik Karate. From Reid B.
Burtnik Karate has been around since 1992. In that time many students have achieved the rank of Shodan or 1st Dan. To give a totally accurate answer would impossible, so here’s a good guess. Shodan Approx. 180-200 Nidan 2nd Dan Approx. 40-50, Sandan 3rd Dan Approx. 10, Yondan 4th Dan 2. Also 3 students have received a Shodan in Kobudo (weapons)
I my case when I started in karate in 1985, I was part of a group of 100 students, out of that group 6 students received their black belt in 1989.

How Many martial arts do you know? from Jacob J. Sensei began his martial arts training in Hung gar kung fu with Albert Fuller. Followed by a year of training in Wing Chun kung fu. He began his formal training in Goju Ryu karate in 1985 receiving his Shodan in 1989. In 1993 he was awarded a Shodan in kobudo (weapons), Sensei Burtnik has also trained extensively in boxing, wrestling, and Ju Jitsu.

When did Burtnik Karate open? from Mickayla
The official grand opening of Burtnik Karate was June 6th 1992. Our first location was 55 Geneva St St. Catharines. Which is now the del la terre bakery. The club then moved to Bunting Rd, then the Pendale Plaza. The club has been on 110 Martindale Rd since Sept. 2000.
